Forum Opened on Cross-Strait Cooperation

   The 2002 Forum on Cross-Strait Cooperation in Machinery & Electronics Sectors was opened yesterday. Chang Xiaocun, Head of the Department of Machinery & Electronics of the Ministry of Foreign Trade & Economic Cooperation, Hong Minghong, Executive Director of Taiwan Association of Electric Motor & Electronics Sectors, and Wu Jiahuang, Vice Chairman of China WTO Studies Society elaborated on the theme of the forum from different perspectives. The Forum was presided over by Wang Xiaochuan, Vice Director of the Department of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Trade & Economic Cooperation.

This Forum has effectively become a platform for the exchanges of insightful ideas on the development of the machinery and electronics sectors across the Taiwan Strait. Chang Xiaocun used factual figures to present an objective account and in-depth analysis of the current situation of the cross-strait cooperation in the machinery and electronics sectors and to shed light on the complimentary nature of the sectors across the Strait. He said that Taiwan’s advantages in information, capital and technology and the mainland’s advantages in cheap labor and talents were mutually complimentary. He stressed the mainland’s vast market potential. He expressed confidence in the continued growth of Taiwanese investment in the machinery and electronics sectors in the mainland. Mr. Chang believed that the CXMEE would bring the two sides economically closer and plays an active role in promoting common prosperity across the Strait.

Hong Minghong spoke of the development of the computer sector and provided a sum-up of the features of the global machinery and electronics sectors and the cross-strait market expansion. He also put forward feasible suggestions for cross-strait cooperation. Wu Jiahuang, who was involved in the negotiations over China’s accession to the WTO, he expounded in his speech the essence and grit of the WTO framework, and expressed his hope for strengthened cooperation across the Strait after the entry to the WTO.

Facts & Figures about Cross-Strait Trade in January and February 2002

In January and February 2002, the mainland’s imports of mechanical and electronic products from Taiwan were worth USD2.43 billion, up 46.1% and accounting for 13.42% of the mainland’s total imports, making Taiwan the mainland’s fourth largest exporter after the EU, Japan and the US. Of the total imports from Taiwan, imports of integrated circuits rose by 89.3%, automatic data processing equipment 60.4%, numerical-controlled machines 23%, plastic processing equipment 38.5%, and home appliances 77.3%.

In January and February 2002, the mainland’s exports to Taiwan were valued at USD460 million, up 55.6% and accounting for 2.42% of the mainland’s total exports. Of the mainland’s total exports, exports of electric apparatus rose by 26.7%, integrated circuits 180%, communication equipment 170% and home appliances 100%.
