Hong Minghong, Executive Director of Taiwan Association of Electric Motor & Electronics Sectors

At the 2002 Forum on Cross-Strait Cooperation in Machinery & Electronics Sectors held yesterday, Hong Minghong, Executive Director of Taiwan Association of Electric Motor & Electronics Sectors, delivered a speech entitled “Uphold the Spirit of Close Cooperation & Intensive Labor of Division.” In his speech, Mr. Hong said:

The respective entries of mainland and Taiwan into the WTO signified the full integration of the markets on the two sides of the Taiwan Strait into the global economy.

The accession to the WTO more than impacts the machinery and electronics sectors; both Taiwan and the mainland will step up the opening of their services and trade sectors, such as insurance, banking, telecommunications, retailing and tourism, implement open, transparent and fair trade and investment policies, promote fair competition, and provide national treatment, thereby creating a better investment environment and facilitating the adjustment and upgrading of our economic structures.

As a matter of fact, the machinery and electronics sectors across the Taiwan Strait will enjoy unprecedented opportunities for growth. We have concluded protocols with other WTO members regarding tariffs on information, communications, electronic parts and components, and semi-conductors and their manufacturing and testing equipment. This can be tremendously conducive to the reduction of costs, market opening and overseas marketing of the information products.

Following the entry to the WTO, we will have greater access to the global market and a more open arena for competition. As long as we can properly maintain our existing advantages, intensify our R&D capabilities, acquire a firm grip of the consumer market, and uphold the spirit of close cooperation and intensive labor of division, we are confident that the machinery and electronics sectors across the Taiwan Strait will be a brighter gem on the oriental market.
