The development of the West Taiwan Straits Economic Zone turned out to be the focus of attention at CXMEE. Zheng Lizhong said that to develop the West Taiwan Straits Economic Zone is a major strategic decision made by the CPC Central Committee and a key part of the cooperation between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits. He expressed his hope that Fujian Province and Xiamen City will give higher priority to the development of the West Taiwan Straits Economic Zone, set out to transform the means of economic growth and adjust their economic structures, spearhead economic development, tap their unique advantages, strengthen across-straits cooperation, promote industrial matching, refine implementation measures, open Pingtan Island to Taiwan investors, and strive for greater achievements.
Xiamen Mayor Liu Cigui state that the 14th CXMEE was the first CXMEE after the State Council announced its decision to support Fujian Province in speeding up the development of the West Taiwan Straits Economic Development Zone, and that developing the West Taiwan Straits Economic Development Zone and strengthening cross-straits exchange and cooperation are major initiatives that are set to produce remarkable results.
Experts and scholars attending CXMEE believed that given the fact that the global economy has yet to bottom out and that the global economic is still recovering, the role of the West Taiwan Straits Economic Development Zone will be special significance and play an exemplary role in facilitate the both sides’ efforts to cope with the economic crisis and strengthen cooperation and mutual completion of their respective advantages.
