The four-day 14th China Xiamen Machinery & Electronics Exhibition (CXMEE) concluded on April 11, 2010 in Xiamen with fruitful results.

With the concerted efforts of the business communities across the Taiwan Straits, and by taking advantage of the global economic recovery and the warming relations across the Taiwan Straits, the 14th CMXEE saw a significant improvement in overall standard and scale, richer functions, greater specialization, and more substantial results. It exhibited the following five major characteristics:

I. Exhibition Scale Up 30% and Brand Recognition as a Specialized Exhibition Boosted

With 14 years of development, CXMEE’s scale has been expanding steadily, its standard has been improving continuously, and its status as Asia’s premier machinery and electronics exhibition has generally recognized in the industries. The 14th CXMEE attracted more than 800 enterprises and provided a record number of 2,547 booths (including over 500 ones for Taiwanese enterprises), up 30% from last year. The exhibition of this year’s CXMEE largely had the following three features:

Firstly, engineering machinery emerged as a strong force and CXMEE’s functions as a trading platform consolidated.

This year’s CXMEE included the 2010 China (Xiamen) International Engineering Machinery and Building Material Machinery Exhibition. It attracted more than 70 complete machinery builders and 200 parts and components markers, including XGMA, Lonking, Jinglong Machinery, and NFLG. It provided 878 booths, almost double the number last year (470), becoming a magnet for visitors at CXMEE. All domestic engineering giants, including XMCCC, XGMA, Lonking, Liugong, and Jingong were all on full display. XMCCC alone staged an exhibition stand of 2000 square meters, becoming the largest exhibitor at CXMEE. Statistics show that the engineering machinery exhibition saw exports deals worth more than US$ 50 million, domestic sales deals valued at RMB 207 million, and potential deals worth RMB 386 million. XMCCC secured deals worth USD 12.91 million, while XGMA, a first-time exhibition at CXMEE, clinched sales contracts valued at RMB 2.54 million and concluded negotiations for supply contracts worth RMB 6 million.

Secondly, industry leaders increased their presence at CXMEE, and the technological standard of exhibits rose.

Internationally recognized industry leaders such as American companies HAAS, Hardinge and Hurco, German firms DMG, TRUMPF and Siemens Appliances, C&U, Dongdian Energy, Victor Taichung Machinery, XGMA, and Xiuggong, attended the exhibition for the first time. GF AgieCharmilles, Haitai Plastics Machinery, Haitian Plastics Machinery, Chende Plastics Machinery, Japan’s Sodick, Mazak, Amada and Panasonic Welders, Stanley Tools, OTC Welders, Hyundai Lathe, and many other renowned enterprises continued to take part in the exhibition, with repeat exhibitors accounting for more than 70%. The number of lathe and rubber and plastics machinery builders at the exhibition increased significantly, and the exhibition of instruments and industrial controls also expanded remarkably. This indicates that CXMEE’s specialization standard has further risen and provides a convenient procurement platform for buyers.

Thirdly, more high-tech products were features and new product releases saw remarkable results.

A significant number of exhibitors took advantage of CXMEE to display their latest sophisticated products. For example, XGMA exhibited China’s first CNG compressed-natural-gas engineering machine with low emissions and zero noise. Topstar Lighting showcased its state-of-the-art T5 fluorescent lights, which boast a service life of 30,000 hours. Ever Shine LED exhibited its small LED night lamps, which took the company 10 years to develop and consumes just a kilowatt of electricity a year. Xiamen Top Unive Technology unveiled the world’s first soft sunlight landscape lamp. Liwin Mechantronic Technology unveiled its “cozy family elevator”. All these products grabbed the attention of CXMEE participants and the press. CXMEE has become the best platform for enterprises to showcase their latest high-tech products.

Also at CXMEE, ceremonies were held to mark the formation of the Cross-Straits Optical Communication Industry Alliance, the establishment of mainland China’s first Taiwan talent service center, the first direct shipment of mainland China engineering machinery to Taiwan, and the sales of the first batch of low-carbon eco-friendly XGMA loaders to Thailand. Many delegations from the heavy machinery industries in Taiwan and Southeast Asia explored procurement opportunities at CXMEE, playing a significant role in pushing forward the development of the West Taiwan Straits Economic Zone and in facilitating the efforts of both sides of the Taiwan Straits to tap into the international market.

II. Industries across the Taiwan Straits Were Actively Involved and the Number of Professional Participants Rose

The 14th CXMEE continued to draw participants from throughout the world. As of noon of April 11, CXMEE attracted 34,839 visitors from 31 countries and territories, including 5,546 overseas visitors. Total attendance rose by more than 3,000 from last year. Taiwan continued to be the largest source of overseas visitors, with 2,438 visitors, accounting for 43.9 percent of total overseas visitors. Countries and regions with a large presence at CXMEE included Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, the United States, Australia, and Hong Kong.

The year’s CXMEE also attracted a large number of overseas organizations. More than 80 overseas organizations participated, including the Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association, the Taipei Importers and Exporters Association, the Cross-Straits Common Market Foundation, Taiwan Turnkey Project Association, Taichung World Trade Center, China E-commerce Association, Kaoshiung Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Association, Kaoshiung World Trade Association, Taiwan Pan-Asia Human Resources, Taiwan Chinfon Group, Taiwan Optical Communication Industry Association, Taiwan Photonics Industry and Technology Development Association, Taiwan Tsinghua University Photonics Research Institute, Taiwan Lighting Fixture Exporters Association, the United States International Chamber of Commerce, and Hong Kong Xiamen Friendship Association, as well as procurement delegations from Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Singapore.

III. Forums and Seminars Focused on Hot Topics and Explored Trends in Cross-Straits Industrial Cooperation and Development

The 14th CXMEE included 22 forums and seminars on cross-straits economic and trade exchanges, technical standard consultation, and product and technology promotion. There were five forums on economic and trade cooperation across the Taiwan Straits, five forums on the formulation of industrial standards and analysis of market situation, and 12 forums on specialized technologies. A total of 112 distinguished guests spoke at the forums and seminars, attracting audiences of more than 5,000. Overall, this year’s forums and seminars had the following three characteristics:

Firstly, the Cross-Straits Economic and Trade Forum explored hot topics across the Taiwan Straits and drew intense attention.

As a signature forum of CXMEE, the Cross-Straits Economic and Trade Forum was themed around the conclusion of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) between the sides of the Taiwan Straits and the development of the West Taiwan Straits Economic Development Zone. At the forum, experts, scholars and business elites explored the significance and functions of the ECFA and the ways to create more welfare for people on both sides. Participants reached a consensus that ECFA represents an irreversible trend and will facilitate the further normalization of cross-straits relationship.

Secondly, specialized forums promoted cross-straits industrial cooperation and technical exchanges were boosted.

The 2010 Cross-Straits Photonics, the Fourth Cross-Straits Flat Panel Display Industry Cooperation Forum, and the Symposium on the Development Trends of the Optical Communication Industries, played an instrumental role in promoting the exchanges of the photonics industries across the Taiwan Straits. The Third Cross-Straits E-commerce Development Forum and the 2010 Global Search Engine Marketing Convention facilitated e-commerce partnership across the Taiwan Straits and identified the development trends of the Internet. The Seminar on the Development of the Internet of Things and Cooperation in the Optical Communication Industries provided an in-depth discussion of the Internet of Things. Moreover, many participating enterprises and industrial associations took advantage of CXMEE as a platform to unveil new technologies, processes and products. Overall, technology exchange and promotion has become a major theme of CXMEE’s forums and seminars and an effective trading platform for promoting new technologies and products.

Thirdly, more forums joined CXMEE and its function in information sharing consolidated.

Renowned economist Yi Xianrong held a lecture on the current financial market situation and future investment opportunities. And the first Cross-Straits Business Forum was also held, where scholars from across the Taiwan Straits shared insights into the integration and development of commercial capital across the Taiwan Straits and explored China’s new economic growth models. Other special forums and seminars include the first Cross-Straits Digital Learning and Future Classroom Summit Forum and the Explore ASEAN – Symposium on the Opportunities and Challenges of International Project Contracting and Engineering Machinery Products. CXMEE has emerged as a major platform for enterprises on both sides of the Taiwan Straits to engage in economic and trade exchange, jointly tap into the international market, and share information.
