Li Cigui, Director of CXMEE Organizing Committee, Mayor of Xiamen

With the advent of the spring, flowers are blooming on Xiamen. This “Island of Egrets” is playing host again to friends from all sectors around the world. On behalf of the CXMEE Organizing Committee and Xiamen Municipal People’s Government, I’d like to extend my warmest welcome to the guests.

CXMEE, an event specially authorized by China’s Ministry of Commerce, is jointly organized by the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronics Products, the Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers Association, and the Xiamen Municipal People’s Government. It’s currently the largest and most recognized specialized machinery and electronics exhibition across the Taiwan Straits. Following 12 years of development, CXMEE has been enjoying constantly enriching contents, a continuously expanding scale, more substantial results, and an ever-rising influence.

The 13th CXMEE is due to open on April 8. It’s a practical move for machinery and electronics industries across the Taiwan Straits to join hands to cope with the tough times and to further match up with each other so that win-win results can be achieved in the midst of the unfolding international financial crisis. The year’s CXMEE is aimed at maximizing value-added services for buyers and suppliers from across the Taiwan Straits; thus, it will feature a strong emphasis on specialization, pertinence and practicality: First, the scope of the exhibits will be expanded. The 2009 China (Xiamen) International Engineering Machinery Exhibition, the 2009 China (Xiamen) Energy-saving Lighting Exhibition, and Oversea Chinese Investment & Trade and Xiamen Commodities Exhibition, and the Cross-Straits E-Commerce Exhibition will be presented during the 13th CXMEE. As significant number of leading international companies and renowned enterprises from across the Taiwan Straits will join these events, the quality of the exhibitors, the standard of specialization, and the scale of the exhibitions will be further enhanced. Second, the themes of the forums will be made more relevant to practical needs. The 2009 Cross-Straits Economic and Trade Forum will be themed around “strengthening the cooperation of small and medium-sized enterprises from across the Taiwan Straits and jointly coping with the financial crisis”, and provide an in-depth exploration of financial collaboration across the Taiwan Straits in the new situation. Moreover, a number of specialized forums will be organized to explore exchange and collaboration in the fields of optoelectronics, flat panel, branding, online marketing and e-commerce. Third, project matchmaking will be more results-focused. Various matchmaking symposia, including the Cross-Straits Technology Trading Matchmaking Symposium, the Cross-Straits Investment and Trade Matchmaking Symposium, the Cross-Straits LED and Solar Photovoltaic Industry Matchmaking Symposium, as well as the Energy-saving Lighting Procurement Matchmaking and Information Release Session, will be organized. Fourth, the clustering effects will become more prominent. The first ever Cross-Straits Higher Vocation Education Exhibition will be staged, and a series of Taiwan-oriented supporting events, such as the promotion of key land plots and real estate in Xiamen, will be organized. We’re confident that with the concerted efforts of the business communities across the Taiwan Straits, the 13th CXMEE will play a significant role in consolidating cross-straits cooperation, coping with the tough times, and sustaining mutual development.

At present, the improving peaceful relations between mainland China and Taiwan is opening up greater opportunities for both sides of the Taiwan Straits to further strengthen exchange and cooperation. As a major central city in the economic zone on the western coast of the Taiwan Straits, Xiamen will continue to spearhead exchange and cooperation across the Taiwan Straits. The city will focus on matchmaking with Taiwan’s advanced manufacturing, software, finance, service outsourcing and tourism industries; set out to build an industrial chain and a cluster of industries with output value in excess of RMB 10 billion, including the flat panel, automobile, electrical and electronics industries; and vigorously develop modern service industries such as finance, logistics, tourism
