On the afternoon of April 12 at the 9th CXMEE, experts and officials from the auto industry jointly called for stronger cooperation between the two sides of Taiwan Strait to build a world-class auto parts and components manufacturing center. In this process, it’s an inevitable trend that automobiles will take on more electronic features; the two sides of Taiwan Strait should cooperate more in technology transfer and cooperation.

Following an explosive growth 2003, China auto industry has entered a stable rapid stage of development.

In 2004, the mainland produced a total of 5 million motor vehicles, and its exports of automobiles and parts and components amounted to USD 8.16 billion, including USD 7.38 billion worth of auto parts and components. The Chinese mainland has become the world’s fourth largest production base, third largest consumer market and first largest potential market of auto products.

Taiwan is home to a fully-fledged auto parts and components industry, enjoying a complete industrial sysem and industry base. The industry’s total output value reaches RMB 100 billion per annum, with a stock of six million of motor vehicles. However, the small size of the Taiwanese market has been a bottleneck of its development. Zhang Yi, deputy director of the Ministry of Commerce says that his ministry will set up national-level auto and component export bases in areas with relatively concentrated industrial clusters of automobiles and parts and components. Expanding the industry of automobiles and parts and components will significantly promote the growth of China’s foreign trade.

Zheng Fuxiong, general-director of Taiwan Electric & Electronic Manufacturers’ Association, says that on the basis of jointly building a world-class manufacturing center of parts and components, more electronic features will be a major direction of the manufacturing of auto parts and components. According to experts’ projections, by 2010, 40% of auto parts and components will become electronic, and the percentage will rise to 60% by 2015.
