On the afernoon of April 12, the CXMEE held a “Cross-Strait Optical Communication Enterprises’ Roundtable Conference”, where business people from both sides of Taiwan Strait conducted extensive, in-depth talks on the new technologies, development prospects and partnership of the optical communication industries aross Taiwan Strait.
Five distinguished guests who spoke at the forum included: Chen Yixin, chief engineer of Bookham Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., Zhu Mudao, secretary-general of Taiwan Alliance of Optical Communication Industries, Yue Chaoyu, general manager of Shenzhen Lightcomm Technology Co., Ltd., Gao Songyue, CEO of Taiwan Qiancai Technology Ltd., and Du Liangzhen, senior advisor of Shenzhen Photo Technology Co., Ltd.
==Market and Talents Cooperation Attracts Most Attention ==
A hot topic among experts from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan is how both sides can cooperate with each other in the field of optical communications. Yue Chaoyu argues that as both sides have their respective superiority, if the cooperation in market and talents can be strengthened, it will significantly promoted the development of China’s optical communication industry.
The Chinese mainland is a vast market; most mainland enterprises are fledging new comes with their biggest advantage lying in talents and in the huge number of research institutes and higher-learning institutions but with limited understanding of the international marketplace, poor channels and difficulty in penetrating the international marketplace; in comparison, Taiwan is strong in understanding the dynamism of the international marketplace, managerial expertise and funding resources.
Yue Chaoyu specifically commented that Xiamen’s optical communication industry faces vast room for development. As Xiamen and Taiwan are separated by only a narrow strip of water, the two places enjoy close ties. Xiamen is home to considerable human resources and receives strong support from the government, making it easy from absorp the experience of Taiwan’s optical communication industry; if “three links” are opened between the two sides, more Taiwanese business people from the optical communication industry will come to Xiamen for development opportunities.
==Association To Be Established to Coordinate “Price Warfare”==
“Price warfare” is a measure adopted by otpical communication manufacturers to cope with competition. Nevertheless, experts believe that price warfare can hardly help the enterprises to win clients. Clients are mostly concerned abut the consistency of products, good quality, timely delivery and product competitiveness. Slashing prices by compromising quality will results in a vicious cycle detrimental to development. Some experts also pointed out that as Taiwan has an industry association for optical communication, the Chinese mainland should also establish a similar organization to deal with the issue of “price warfare” and to promote the development of the industry.
==Expand and Strengthen the Enterprise to Withstand Competition ==
Statistics indicate that the global market for optical network hardware was worth USD 9 billion, up 10% from 2003. This strong growth momentum is likely to continue to 2008 at least. The 21st century is a brilliant era of optical electronics. “Small players will not be able to survive the rough seas of competition; it’s imperative to make enterprises bigger.”
“Academic conferences should be combined with the industry.” Prof. Chen Yixin said, “Otpical-fiber networks can be used to CT plates, satellite photography, high-resolution transmission of digital movie.”
